Two pipe sections for the new Botlek bridge

Two pipe sections for the new Botlek bridge.
The Botlek bridge just outside Rotterdam carries a narrow road and has limited navigation clearance. It opens and closes frequently, delaying both road traffic and shipping on the Botlek. Work is currently underway on a much wider and higher bridge which will improve the flow of traffic on both the road and the waterway.

Larvik Rock barge parbuckled (uprighted) by Mammoet Salvage

While on tow, late in 2012, the Larvik Rock barge capsized off the English coast. This barge is used for transporting rock for civil engineering applications and is unusually large, with a length overall of 122 meters and a beam of 36.6 meters. While still upside down the Larvik Rock was towed to the Port of Rotterdam, the Netherlands and moored at the Mammoet Heavy Lift Terminal in Schiedam. To upright the barge Mammoet Salvage developed a plan to “parbuckle” it with sheerlegs while keeping most of the barge underwater. This reduces the required capacity of the sheerlegs and therefore the cost to the client. When preparing the project Mammoet Salvage was supported by the marine engineers of Mammoet Solutions.

Record breaking trip in the searing desert

Samsung Saudi Arabia, the main contractor for a new Saudi Aramco petrochemical plant in Shaybah, Rub Al Khali (Empty Quarter) needed a solution for the transportation and installation of an Amine Contactor weighing 1,048 tons. The steep hills, narrow and winding roads, weight and size of the load and the hot climate meant that detailed planning was essential. Mammoet professionals had started preparing for the project over a year in advance. The train weight including the trailers was 1,444 tons. The 1,080-kilometer route led across the desert, from Dammam Industrial Area to Shaybah. Most of the roads were narrow, sometimes only seven meters wide, with slopes of up to 8%. The load was transported on Kamag and Goldhofer hydraulic trailers and ten prime movers. Each hill was a challenge: going up with four trucks in front of the load and six behind, and changing over at the crest of the hill to six behind and four in front. Perfect coordination was required to prevent shock loads. The hydraulic suspension of the trailers had to be adjusted continuously at the crest of the hill to ensure an effective distribution of the load.

Mammoet Salvage refloats coaster in Portugal

On 19 January 2013 the coaster Merle lost power in a heavy storm off the coast of Portugal, and ran aground on a beach. Mammoet Salvage proposed an attractive solution to the ship owner: to purchase the Merle for a nominal amount, refloat the vessel, and sell it for scrap. The benefit to the owner was the simplicity of this solution: all responsibility was transferred to Mammoet.

A first for Mammoet in IJmuiden

The world's heaviest mobile crane performed its first commercial on 22 February 2013, for Mammoet. The company deployed its brand new Liebherr LTM 1750-9.1 to lift a 340 ton temporary support leg for an offshore drilling rig. Another first was that this was the first time a load this heavy was lifted by mobile cranes only. The new 750 ton crane undertook the job together with two 700 ton mobile cranes. The three cranes needed two hours to lift the leg from the water onto an offshore supply ship. The support was used for the repair of the GPS Saturn drilling rig moored in IJmondhaven. It was temporarily placed under the rig so that one of its 120 meter high legs could be repaired.

In mid-February MV Feruz, a specialist ferry for railway wagons, was one of several vessels which got into difficulties in a heavy storm in the Black Sea. The master demonstrated impressive seamanship by steering her into a small, narrow (outside) swimming pool of an aqua park, close to the port of Samsun in Turkey. Mammoet Salvage, jointly with Iskes Towage & Salvage tugs from IJmuiden signed a LOF salvage agreement on the rail ferry Feruz to provide emergency response services to stabilize the vessel and prevent further damage to the vessel and aqua park.

In this configuration the crane capacity is 1,000 tons, and in other configurations the new cranes have capacities up to 3,200 tons. Mammoet is the worldwide leader in heavy lifting and transport and designed these cranes in-house for large construction projects (e.g. oil refineries, power stations, offshore structures) throughout the world.

Now that the 2012 Dakar Rally is approaching, the Mammoet Rallysport stable features four racing monsters. Driver Martin van den Brink will again take his red and black truck to the limits. The cooperation between the businessman from Harskamp, the Netherlands and Mammoet is characterized by an iron will to succeed and to do everything possible for that. Previous rallies have proven the effectiveness of this approach: the team reached 11th place among the trucks in the 2011 Dakar event. This inspired Mammoet to make an even greater commitment this year: Martin will now be assisted by a fast support truck on the track and a 6x6 support vehicle in the bivouac. Everyone at the home base will be kept up to date from a Dodge SUV with the journalists.

This is primarily the outcome of the quality and professional approach of our people. “Striving for professional excellence” is one of Mammoet’s corporate values for a good reason. As a business, we invest a lot in our personnel and we get a lot back from them. Customers benefit from this in the form of ever and more versatile engineered heavy lifting and transport services.
